Microsoft Responds to Opera’s Antitrust Complaints

http://mashable.com/2007/12/14/microsoft-opera-antitrust/

I really don’t know why people think the way to compete with MSFT is in the courts. Everyone who’s ever done it only ever wins a pyrric victory. The amount of focus required by a small company to try and beat Microsoft’s army of in-house and outside counsel takes the company’s eye off the most important thing: the customer.

Microsoft does have incredible market power. I helped wield it when I was there. I’ve been the victim of it at RealNetworks. Yet I wonder about the opportunities that have been missed by companies like Real because the executive focus put on antitrust litigation.

My only hope for Opera, which has a great product line, is that they don’t lose their customer fous and figure out that innovation, not litigation is the solution.
