I think this is exactly right. I’ve stopped using pay WiFi hotspots like T-Mobile. I’ve got 2 (yes, 2) wireless broadband USB modems, one for EVDO-A on Verizon and one HSDPA on AT&T. Between them I can use them on my Mac Air or MacBook Pro anywhere, not just in the local Starbucks. Having the cards means I can go to a client’s office and not have to screw around with the IT folks to the right SSID, WEP/WPA passwords, etc.

Is it cheaper than if I was only using the unlimited T-Mobile hotspot plan? Of course not. But it’s flexible in a way that constantly looking for WiFi isn’t.
