Apple is considering offering AirPlay video streaming to third-party device manufacturers via licensing, Bloomberg reports. It’s an idea that could provide a greater presence for Apple in the living room, but also potentially cost the Apple TV its tentative foothold there.
This is exactly what Apple should do to own the living room, but what they probably won’t do. I don’t recall them having a long history of success licensing software innovations to third parties and would rather own the ecosystem end to end.
Also if you’re a Sony or Samsung TV exec, do you make an AirPlay video deal which gives you access to the iOS user base at the cost of your own phone and tablet initiatives?
