Cutting out the fat — in my Address Book

I started this last night, but I’m continuing today by the light of the HDTV football games.

I am cleaning out my LinkedIn/Plaxo/Address Book connections. Some folks live for some magical number of connections. Before I started last night I was at around 950+ on LinkedIn and 1600+ names in my Address Book. Why? It’s too many to scroll through on the iPhone. It’s too many to sync to a Sony Ericsson W880i which has a 1000 contact limit. It’s really too many for Plaxo to handle on a regular basis.

The value of your connections is the number of folks who’s biz card info you collected from CES or NAB two years ago and had your admin type in. The real value is from people you’ve actually dealt with on a regular basis and developed a real relationship with. I figure that list for me is a lot closer to 500 people than 1500, so I’m going to be wearing out my delete key for the next day or two.

If you’re reading this blog then you probably actually know me, so don’t worry.
